Masters from every era have left traces of this inner tension: from works of humble inspiration to masterpieces that have spanned the centuries, interpreting the great changes in faith and the world.

Pope Benedict XVI expressed the link between art and spirituality with lucidity. During his meeting with artists in the Sistine Chapel, he said:

"The experience of authentic beauty, even if fleeting, dilates the soul, wrenches it from anguish and makes it perceive the vastness of mystery. [...] A work of art can open the eyes of the spirit and the heart, propel one upwards."
